Wednesday Scripture Verse

Humility and Speech

These are some scripture verses that I have received in the mail. I have been saving them, and thought I would share them with you.

Bible and Roses

Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.
Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye
may know how ye ought to answer every man.
-- Colossians 4:5-6

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble
themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked
ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and
will heal their land.
-- 2 Chronicles 7:14

A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till
afterwards.
Proverbs 29:11, King James Version

Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind
without rain.
Proverbs 25:14, King James Version

By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and
life.
Proverbs 22:4, King James Version

He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of
understanding is of an excellent spirit.
Proverbs 17:27, King James Version

Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD:
though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.
Proverbs 16:5, King James Version

Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to
divide the spoil with the proud.
Proverbs 16:19, King James Version

The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before
honour is humility.
Proverbs 15:33, King James Version

The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of
fools poureth out foolishness.
Proverbs 15:2, King James Version

He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth
wide his lips shall have destruction.
Proverbs 13:3, King James Version

The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the
just shall come out of trouble.
Proverbs 12:13, King James Version

In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that
refraineth his lips is wise.
Proverbs 10:19, King James Version

But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for
whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
Matthew 5:37, King James Version

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift
you up.
James 4:10, King James Version

Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My
brethren, these things ought not so to be. Doth a fountain send
forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
James 3:10-11, King James Version

If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his
tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is
vain.

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble
themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked

Manifest Thyself to Us

John 14:21
And will manifest myself to him.

The Lord Jesus gives special revelations of Himself to His people. Even if Scripture did not declare this, there are many of the children of God who could testify the truth of it from their own experience. They have had manifestations of their Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in a peculiar manner, such as no mere reading or hearing could afford. In the biographies of eminent saints, you will find many instances recorded in which Jesus has been pleased, in a very special manner to speak to their souls, and to unfold the wonders of His person; yea, so have their souls been steeped in happiness that they have thought themselves to be in heaven, whereas they were not there, though they were well nigh on the threshold of it-for when Jesus manifests Himself to His people, it is heaven on earth; it is paradise in embryo; it is bliss begun. Especial manifestations of Christ exercise a holy influence on the believer's heart. One effect will be humility. If a man says, "I have had such-and-such spiritual communications, I am a great man," he has never had any communion with Jesus at all; for "God hath respect unto the lowly: but the proud He knoweth afar off." He does not need to come near them to know them, and will never give them any visits of love. Another effect will be happiness; for in God's presence there are pleasures for evermore. Holiness will be sure to follow. A man who has no holiness has never had this manifestation. Some men profess a great deal; but we must not believe any one unless we see that his deeds answer to what he says. "Be not deceived; God is not mocked." He will not bestow His favours upon the wicked: for while He will not cast away a perfect man, neither will He respect an evil doer. Thus there will be three effects of nearness to Jesus-humility, happiness, and holiness. May God give them to thee, Christian!

Honour and Humility

Proverbs 15:33
Before honour is humility.

Humiliation of soul always brings a positive blessing with it. If we empty our hearts of self God will fill them with His love. He who desires close communion with Christ should remember the word of the Lord, "To this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at My word." Stoop if you would climb to heaven. Do we not say of Jesus, "He descended that He might ascend"? so must you. You must grow downwards, that you may grow upwards; for the sweetest fellowship with heaven is to be had by humble souls, and by them alone. God will deny no blessing to a thoroughly humbled spirit. "Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven," with all its riches and treasures. The whole exchequer of God shall be made over by deed of gift to the soul which is humble enough to be able to receive it without growing proud because of it. God blesses us all up to the full measure and extremity of what it is safe for Him to do. If you do not get a blessing, it is because it is not safe for you to have one. If our heavenly Father were to let your unhumbled spirit win a victory in His holy war, you would pilfer the crown for yourself, and meeting with a fresh enemy you would fall a victim; so that you are kept low for your own safety. When a man is sincerely humble, and never ventures to touch so much as a grain of the praise, there is scarcely any limit to what God will do for him. Humility makes us ready to be blessed by the God of all grace, and fits us to deal efficiently with our fellow men. True humility is a flower which will adorn any garden. This is a sauce with which you may season every dish of life, and you will find an improvement in every case. Whether it be prayer or praise, whether it be work or suffering, the genuine salt of humility cannot be used in excess.

He Humbled Himself

He humbled Himself.

Jesus is the great teacher of lowliness of heart. We need daily to learn of Him. See the Master taking a towel and washing His disciples' feet! Follower of Christ, wilt thou not humble thyself? See Him as the Servant of servants, and surely thou canst not be proud! Is not this sentence the compendium of His biography, "He humbled Himself"? Was He not on earth always stripping off first one robe of honour and then another, till, naked, He was fastened to the cross, and there did He not empty out His inmost self, pouring out His life-blood, giving up for all of us, till they laid Him penniless in a borrowed grave? How low was our dear Redeemer brought! How then can we be proud? Stand at the foot of the cross, and count the purple drops by which you have been cleansed; see the thorn-crown; mark His scourged shoulders, still gushing with encrimsoned rills; see hands and feet given up to the rough iron, and His whole self to mockery and scorn; see the bitterness, and the pangs, and the throes of inward grief, showing themselves in His outward frame; hear the thrilling shriek, "My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" And if you do not lie prostrate on the ground before that cross, you have never seen it: if you are not humbled in the presence of Jesus, you do not know Him. You were so lost that nothing could save you but the sacrifice of God's only begotten. Think of that, and as Jesus stooped for you, bow yourself in lowliness at His feet. A sense of Christ's amazing love to us has a greater tendency to humble us than even a consciousness of our own guilt. May the Lord bring us in contemplation to Calvary, then our position will no longer be that of the pompous man of pride, but we shall take the humble place of one who loves much because much has been forgiven him. Pride cannot live beneath the cross. Let us sit there and learn our lesson, and then rise and carry it into practice.
