Broad Rivers and Streams

Yellowstone River Meandering Through Hayden Valley at Sunset, Yellowstone National Park, USA by John Elk III
Yellowstone River Meandering Through Hayden Valley at Sunset, Yellowstone National Park, USA

Isaiah 33:21
The glorious Lord will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams.

Broad rivers and streams produce fertility, and abundance in the land. Places near broad rivers are remarkable for the variety of their plants and their plentiful harvests. God is all this to His Church. Having God she has abundance. What can she ask for that He will not give her? What want can she mention which He will not supply? "In this mountain shall the Lord of Hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things." Want ye the bread of life? It drops like manna from the sky. Want ye refreshing streams? The rock follows you, and that Rock is Christ. If you suffer any want it is your own fault; if you are straitened you are not straitened in Him, but in your own bowels. Broad rivers and streams also point to commerce. Our glorious Lord is to us a place of heavenly merchandize. Through our Redeemer we have commerce with the past; the wealth of Calvary, the treasures of the covenant, the riches of the ancient days of election, the stores of eternity, all come to us down the broad stream of our gracious Lord. We have commerce, too, with the future. What galleys, laden to the water's edge, come to us from the millennium! What visions we have of the days of heaven upon earth! Through our glorious Lord we have commerce with angels; communion with the bright spirits washed in blood, who sing before the throne; nay, better still, we have fellowship with the Infinite One. Broad rivers and streams are specially intended to set forth the idea of security. Rivers were of old a defence. Oh! beloved, what a defence is God to His Church! The devil cannot cross this broad river of God. How he wishes he could turn the current, but fear not, for God abideth immutably the same. Satan may worry, but he cannot destroy us; no galley with oars shall invade our river, neither shall gallant ship pass thereby.

All The Way My Savior Leads Me

I was not familiar with the hymn, but saw this lovely video.

All the way my Savior leads me; What have I to ask beside?
Can I doubt His tender mercy, Who thru life has been my guide?
Heav'nly peace, divinest comfort, Here by faith in Him to dwell!
For I know whate'er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well.

All the way my Savior leads me; Cheers each winding path I tread,
Gives me grace for ev'ry trial, Feeds me with the living bread:
Tho my weary steps may falter, And my soul athirst may be,
Gushing from the Rock before me, Lo! a spring of joy I see.

All the way my Savior leads me; Oh, the fullness of His love!
Perfect rest to me is promised In my Father's house above;
When my spirit, cloth'd immortal, Wings its flight to realms of day,
This my song thru endless ages: Jesus led me all the way.

A Tag From Sally

My friend, Sally at Smiling Sally has tagged me for a book meme. Sally loves books and is a book reviewer. Her blog is very cute with cartoons, a "Blue Monday" that she started, a "Pink Saturday," and other neat posts. The rules for the meme are:

1. Link to the person who tagged you and post the rules on your blog.

2. Share seven random and/or weird book facts about yourself.

3. Tag seven random people at the end of your post, and include links to their blogs.

4. Let each person know that they've been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

My Seven Random Facts are:

1. I will always remember my mother taking me downtown, when I was very young, to a little old library. I believe it used to be a church.

2. I am good at starting books and not finishing them.

3. But when I am reading a very interesting book, I cannot put it down and have to finish it.

4. I have the Scribner Radio Music Library, volumes of music, and I enjoy playing many of the songs.

5. When my grandson was young, I loved to read to him and buy books for him. Now he loves to read and is very smart.

6. In High School I remember pushing a bookmobile around to patients in the hospital, so they could check out books. I believe this was a part of the Red Cross.

7. One year while working at my church, I read the Bible through and received a certificate from the Pastor.

I am tagging:

Barbara at Tidbits and Treasures

Mimi at Listen to Grammie

Deborah at Songs From My Journey

Patricia at Pollywog Creek

Kelli at There is no place like home

Saija at Thro' A Glass Darkly

Maxine at Nanna's Reflections

Sally also offered the awards below to her friends. I would love for my friends to also have them, so please do take them to share. Thank you, Sally.

A New Painting

I went to a neighbor and friend's Christmas Open House Saturday. She is an artist and paints beautifully. I bought one of her original paintings to go over my mantle. I probably need to get another one. Two other people there wanted it, so I thought I had better go ahead and buy me a present. You can find her website here.

My Friend's Book

I recently won my friend, Deborah Bolack's pretty book, " Stepping Stones Along My Journey", in one of her Giveaways. I have begun reading her very interesting book. Deborah is gifted with words for writing books, poems and songs.

I love the way her book is written like short devotionals, and it is filled with scripture from God's Word. In her book, Deb reflects about Stepping Stones to New Life, Golden Memories (including her children), Mercy and Grace, and Steps to Higher Ground. Each page consists of a Title, Pearls of Wisdom (scriptures), and Gems From My Journey ( a writing, poem, or song lyric). Then she includes a question for us to think about. Concluding the page is My New Day Resolution (to the Lord).

I believe you will enjoy Deborah's well written, devotional book of treasured memories. I showed the book to my neighbor, who is in her 80's. Her husband has also written poetry books. She said " She will make a fortune on this. I would love to have one." Be sure to enter her Christmas Giveaway to win "Stepping Stones Along My Journey."

Evening and Morning

Genesis 1:5
The evening and the morning were the first day.

Was it so even in the beginning? Did light and darkness divide the realm of time in the first day? Then little wonder is it if I have also changes in my circumstances from the sunshine of prosperity to the midnight of adversity. It will not always be the blaze of noon even in my soul concerns, I must expect at seasons to mourn the absence of my former joys, and seek my Beloved in the night. Nor am I alone in this, for all the Lord's beloved ones have had to sing the mingled song of judgment and of mercy, of trial and deliverance, of mourning and of delight. It is one of the arrangements of Divine providence that day and night shall not cease either in the spiritual or natural creation till we reach the land of which it is written, "there is no night there." What our heavenly Father ordains is wise and good. What, then, my soul, is it best for thee to do? Learn first to be content with this divine order, and be willing, with Job, to receive evil from the hand of the Lord as well as good. Study next, to make the outgoings of the morning and the evening to rejoice. Praise the Lord for the sun of joy when it rises, and for the gloom of evening as it falls. There is beauty both in sunrise and sunset, sing of it, and glorify the Lord. Like the nightingale, pour forth thy notes at all hours. Believe that the night is as useful as the day. The dews of grace fall heavily in the night of sorrow. The stars of promise shine forth gloriously amid the darkness of grief. Continue thy service under all changes. If in the day thy watchword be labour, at night exchange it for watch. Every hour has its duty, do thou continue in thy calling as the Lord's servant until He shall suddenly appear in His glory. My soul, thine evening of old age and death is drawing near, dread it not, for it is part of the day; and the Lord has said, "I will cover him all the day long."

God Hears Our Prayers

Praying Hands, 1508-09 by Albrecht Dürer
Praying Hands, 1508-09

Acts 9:11
Behold, he prayeth.

Prayers are instantly noticed in heaven. The moment Saul began to pray the Lord heard him. Here is comfort for the distressed but praying soul. Oftentimes a poor broken-hearted one bends his knee, but can only utter his wailing in the language of sighs and tears; yet that groan has made all the harps of heaven thrill with music; that tear has been caught by God and treasured in the lachrymatory of heaven. "Thou puttest my tears into thy bottle," implies that they are caught as they flow. The suppliant, whose fears prevent his words, will be well understood by the Most High. He may only look up with misty eye; but "prayer is the falling of a tear." Tears are the diamonds of heaven; sighs are a part of the music of Jehovah's court, and are numbered with "the sublimest strains that reach the majesty on high." Think not that your prayer, however weak or trembling, will be unregarded. Jacob's ladder is lofty, but our prayers shall lean upon the Angel of the covenant and so climb its starry rounds. Our God not only hears prayer but also loves to hear it. "He forgetteth not the cry of the humble." True, He regards not high looks and lofty words; He cares not for the pomp and pageantry of kings; He listens not to the swell of martial music; He regards not the triumph and pride of man; but wherever there is a heart big with sorrow, or a lip quivering with agony, or a deep groan, or a penitential sigh, the heart of Jehovah is open; He marks it down in the registry of His memory; He puts our prayers, like rose leaves, between the pages of His book of remembrance, and when the volume is opened at last, there shall be a precious fragrance springing up therefrom.
"Faith asks no signal from the skies,
To show that prayers accepted rise,
Our Priest is in His holy place,
And answers from the throne of grace."
