"Go to Dark Gethsemane"
I am posting the link to an Easter post from 2008. When I was a member of the Moravian Church, we sang this hymn during Passion Week, "Go to Dark Gethsemane." I love this song and think it is so pretty.
This is song that Moravians sing on Palm Sunday.

Thousands attend the Easter Sunrise Service in Old Salem, Winston-Salem, NC each year. This is a video from some years ago, and I'm sorry the quality is not good. The people are walking down the path to the graveyard while the Moravian band is playing. I posted about the Easter Sunrise Service in 2008 here.

I used to sing this song when I belonged to the Moravian Church. I love their music.
Go to Dark Gethsemane
Go to dark Gethsemane, Ye who feel the tempter's power;
Your Redeemer's conflict see, Watch with Him one bitter hour.
Turn not from His griefs away; Learn of Jesus Christ to pray.
Follow to the judgment hall, View the Lord of life arraigned;
O the wormwood and the gall! O the pangs His soul sustained!
Shun not suffering, shame or loss; Learn of Him to bear the Cross.
Calvary's mournful mountain climb, There, adoring at His feet,
Mark that miracle of time, God's own Sacrifice complete.
"It is finished!" hear Him cry; Learn of Jesus Christ to die.
Early hasten to the tomb, Where they laid His breathless clay;
All is solitude and gloom; Who hath taken Him away?
Christ is risen - He meets our eyes! Saviour, teach us so to rise.
James Montgomery, 1820 C.I. La Trobe, 1790
Here is a post from 2008 of this song. I have more songs and posts about Moravian traditions under my Moravian Label.

Recently it was such a beautiful day, I went out for breakfast and then to my favorite garden shop, LA Reynolds, just to look around.
The entrance was very colorful, ready for fall.
These Moravian stars were hanging from the ceiling. They are very popular here as Christmas decorations. They are whiter than my picture.
The chrysanthemums were such lovely colors. My camera almost captured their beauty.

I thought this manger scene was beautiful, even though I believe it was acrylic.
I like this white Santa Claus.
Aren't these pretty birdhouses? I love how they are arranged.

This is all I bought. I love these decorative cabbages.

Thanks for looking at my pictures.

I am posting part of a post I did last year, because I love the Palm Sunday song the Moravians sing. Please be sure to click on the "here" below to listen to this wonderful, joyful song played by the Moravian band.

A hymn for Easter Sunday ~
Alleluia! Alleluia!Hearts to heaven and voices raise;
Sing to God a hymn of gladness, Sing to God a hymn of praise;
He who on the Cross a Victim For the world's salvation bled,
Jesus Christ, the King of Glory, Now is risen from the dead.
Christ is risen, Christ, the first fruits Of the holy harvest field
Which will all its full abundance At His second coming yield;
When the golden ears of harvest Will their heads before Him wave,
Ripened by His glorious sunshine From the furrows of the grave.
Christ is risen, we are risen! Shed upon us heavenly grace,
Rain and dew and gleams of glory From the brightness of Thy face;
That we, Lord, with hearts in heaven, Here on earth may
fruitful be,
And by angel hands be gathered And be ever safe with Thee.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Glory be to God on high!
Alleluia! to the Saviour Who has gained the victory!
Alleluia! to the Spirit, Font of love and sanctity!
Alleluia! Alleluia! To the Triune Majesty!
Christopher Wordsworth (1862) Arthur S. Sullivan (1874)

I found this article about the Easter Sunrise Service in Old Salem. We used to go and would dress very warmly, because it was usually extremely cold. The beautiful walk down to God's acre for the sunrise is very impressive, with the bands playing.
I believe this may be the chorale the band plays during the night ~ "Sleepers, Wake!"
This is the first chorale sung by the congregation at the 6:00AM service, after the pastor says "The Lord has risen" and everyone says " The Lord is risen indeed!"
Hail, All Hail, Victorious Lord and Savior,
Thou hast burst the bonds of death,
Grant us, as to Mary, the great favor
To embrace Thy feet in faith:
Thou hast in in our stead the curse endured,
And for us eternal life procured,
Joyful we with one accord
Hail Thee as our risen Lord.
I'm sorry that the music has been removed.
The last hymn sung is "Sing Hallelujah, Praise the Lord", and the music has been removed.
Here are some more pictures of Old Salem and the church.
Here is a link for more information about the service.

This is another hymn from the Moravian hymnal sung during Passion Week.
I found this neat video of the Moravian Band celebrating their 550th anniversary at Wake Forest University Wait Chapel. I wanted to show it to you, because I am posting some of their beautiful Easter hymns. The joyous last song is "Sing Hallelujah, Praise the Lord!"

This is a beautiful hymn,sung by Moravians, during Passion Week. I love the verse that begins "What language shall I borrow." You can read more about the hymn here and listen to the mp3, where the hymn is sung. The sheet music is also available.
O Sa-cred Head, now wound-ed,
With grief and shame weighed down,
Now scourn-ful-ly sur-round-ed With thorns, thine on-ly crown!
O sa-cred Head, what glo-ry, What bliss, till now was Thine!
Yet though de-spised and gor-y, I joy to call Thee mine.
What lan-guage shall I bor-row To thank Thee, dear-est Friend,
For all Thy dy-ing sor-row, Thy pit-y with-out end?
O make me Thine for-ev-er, And should I faint-ing be,
Lord, let me nev-er, ne-ver Out-live my love to Thee!
I give Thee thanks un-feign-ed, O Je-sus, Friend in need,
For what Thy soul sus-tain-ed, When Thou for me didst bleed;
Grant me to lean un-shak-en Up-on Thy faith-ful-ness,
Un-til I hence am tak-en To see Thee face to face.
You can also listen to the Moravian band playing the hymn here. Just click on the black and white notes to the left of Harmony and others.

When my children were growing up, we were members of a Moravian Church. I don't know if you are familiar with that early Protestant Denomination. You can read about the Moravians here. I love the Moravian Seal (Our Lamb Has Conquered, Let Us Follow Him). Their music is beautiful with chorals and bands. And the traditions of Lovefeasts, Easter Sunrise Services and Christmas teas draw many visitors to Old Salem. I will share more about that later. This is the kind of lovefeast held in the church services here. Coffee is served in a mug with a plain, but delicious, Moravian bun. Hymns are sung during the service. The candles are trimmed at Christmas, and the Christmas Eve services are beautiful. I just found this picture here. I used to sing this sweet hymn often with the children I taught in Sunday School.
Jesus Makes My Heart Rejoice

Jesus makes my heart rejoice, I'm his sheep and know His voice;
He's a shepherd, kind and gracious, And His pastures are delicious;
Constant love to me he shows, Yea, my very name He knows.

Trusting His mild staff always, I go in and out in peace;
He will feed me with the treasure Of His grace in richest measure;
When athirst to Him I cry, Living water He'll supply.

Should not I for gladness leap, Led by Jesus as His sheep?
For when these blest days are over To the arms of my dear Saviour
I shall be conveyed to rest, Amen, yea, my lot is blest.
Words: Henrietta Louise von Hayn (1776)
Music: Herrnhut, Herrnhutter Choralbuch (1735)
Listen to the hymn here. We paused longer after the third and fourth phrases.
